大约在18世纪80年代，一个名叫罗伯特.福琼(RobertFortune)的英国植树采集家(TheTeaThief)将茶树种子放入一个用特殊玻璃制成的便携式保温箱中，偷偷地带上了开往印度的轮船，于是在印度培养了十万株以上的茶树苗，形成了大规模的茶园，并由此产生了英国的红茶文化。

中国茶在向西方各国传播种过程中，许多国家只传去了茶叶，而只有在英国真正形成了一种文化，这也许跟英国特有的文化和英国人贵族式的品味有关。

有资料表明，世界上饮茶最多的是爱尔兰英国人，每年人均饮茶在十公斤以上。他们饮茶、爱茶、文人以茶助思，友人以茶会友，可说茶的浪漫、茶花芳香无处不在。英国的卡林娜皇后喜饮红茶，并说饮茶使她身材苗条，英国诗人由此作了一首题为《饮茶皇后》的诗，诗中写到：

花神宠秋色，嫦娥衿月桂。

月桂与秋色，美难与茶比。

一为后中英，一为群芳最。

物阜称东土，携来感勇士。

助我清明思，湛然去烦累。

欣蓬事诞晨，祝寿介以此。

这首诗写出了茶的美好，茶的精神。茶影响着英国的各个阶层，英国人在晨起之时，要饮早茶，即earlymorningtea，他们早餐就以红茶为主要饮料。到了上午11点（相当于亚洲的上午10点钟），无论你是空闲在家的贵族，还是繁忙的上班族，都要休息片刻，喝一杯eleven's，他们称之为早上11点左右的便餐。到了中午，吃了午餐之后，少不了配上一杯奶茶。而后在下午3点半至4点左右还要来一杯下午茶，他们称之为Hightea。英国人在喝茶时总要配上小圆饼和蛋糕、三明治等点心。一般的家庭主妇都很擅长做这类糕点，正式的晚餐中也少不了茶。

从前，贵族式的下午茶总是颇为讲究的，在一个大的庄院内，要按时把家人招集齐来喝红茶总是一件不易的事，所以他们摇着精美的铃铛，用铃铛声来告诉家人是用下午茶的时候了。英国红茶的讲究，除了它特有的文化氛围外，还有它独特的、精美的茶具，茶具多用陶瓷做成，茶具上绘有英国植物与花卉的图案，把英国人对大自然的热爱表现得淋漓尽致。茶具除了美观之外，还极其的坚固，很有收藏价值。整套的茶具一般包括茶杯、茶壶、滤杓、广口奶精瓶、砂糖壶、茶铃、茶巾、保温棉罩、茶叶罐、热水壶、托盘，其中托盘种类很多，有银制品、木制品或塑胶制品等，他们喜欢在托盘中铺上一层蕾丝，把托盘点缀得很优雅，从点点细节上都让你感到英国人高雅的品味。

品饮红茶是英国独有的文化，也是他们待客的礼节，在英国红茶无所不在，但做为一个中国人，还是能从茶的芳香和甘美中品饮出它是来自东方的甘露，嗅出东方泥土的芳香
